A few notes before we begin...

Featured Items

We have had several calls from gardeners unable to find Orthene.  Apparently some of the chain stores have dropped the product and are telling customers that the product is no longer being manufactured. Orthene is still being manufactured and is available if you ask for it in real garden center.

We have in stock now the very hard to find “Spigelia marilandica” (Indian Pink). This plant is native to Maryland.  It has red flowers tipped in yellow and will grow in partial shade.  We have the best crop we have ever had of these rare plants. They are in 1 gallon pots and are $9.85 each.

We also have Caryopteris Longwood Blue back in stock.

Red, White & Blue Perennial Gardens

At this time of the year our thoughts turn to a patriotic theme and the colors of the flag: red, white and blue.  A red, white and blue annual garden is relatively easy to create.

A perennial combination blooming for the 4th of July in pure white, bright red and deep blue is a little more difficult. For full sun, the best combination is one that will bloom starting in July into the summer. Use a red monarda such as Gardenview Scarlet; for the purest white I suggest the Phlox David; and for a deep flag blue I suggest Veronica Sunny Border Blue.  A planting with 3-5 plants of each perennial makes a very nice display.  I suggest placing the monarda and phlox towards the rear and the veronica in the foreground. These plants usually bloom together, but seasons change and there are no guarantees.

If you would like a patriotic garden to bloom earlier in May and to be lower growing consider Dianthus Gold Dust for the red, Veronica Crater Lake Blue and for pure white, use Iberis (candy tuft) Little Gem.

Featured Plant - Little Rascal Holly

It has taken us over 5 years to get this magnificent shrub, but finally it is here.  Little Rascal Holly is extremely cold hardy and requires very little maintenance.  It is a slow growing evergreen, that reaches a mature size of about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
