I have chosen six easy-maintenance flowering plants that any mother is sure to enjoy - what I believe to be just about the best of the best.

I’ve selected two for fragrance; a U.S.D.A. hybrid of the Korean Spice Viburnum and the Dwarf Korean Lilac. Only one plant of Viburnum Mohawk is so powerfully fragrant that it will perfume the entire neighborhood, and the bright red buds last for weeks before the blossoms open. It is disease-resistant, with glossy deep green leaves that turn brilliant orange-red in the fall.

The dwarf Korean lilac is my favorite of all the lilacs. It matures at only 5 feet and is never troubled by either borers or mildew. And, in most seasons, it reblooms in late summer and fall with the same fragrant blooms, although fewer in number.

Most low-maintenance roses are pink. I have chosen two that are not. The best minimum care red-colored rose - ‘Knockout’, and the apricot-shaded ‘What a Peach’. Knockout increases in popularity every year, not only because of its low-maintenance, but also because its disease-free bushy dense habit. What a Peach is brand new this year, so you can be sure Mom does not have one.

Also new is the ever-blooming dwarf pink daylily - Rosy Returns, with all the good attributes of Stella de Oro, in a nice rosy pink shade.

So new that we won’t even have plants until July is the reblooming Hydrangea Endless Summer, with mopheads of blue or pink (depending upon the soil) all summer long - even after the toughest of winters.
