Common Name: Seven Son Flower

Description: Terminal clusters of red buds open to seven star-like white flowers, with the sweet fragrance of jasmine, in late summer and early fall when few trees bloom. After petal drop, the seven calyces expand and turn bright reddish purple, crowning the seven fruits--ad display which persists into late fall and is even more prominent thatn the first. Winter inters is provided by the shaggy tan bark which exfoliates to reveal a cinnamon-colored interior. Large, heart-shaped foliage comes early and remains glossy green almost until leaf-drop. Blooms and fruits occur at an early age. Best performance is achieved in full sun. A reasonable performance can be expected in light shade. Almost any soil is suitable. Rapidly matures naturally to a 180" multi-stemmed tree with a 120" wide fountain-shaped crown. Can be trained to a single stem. Rare and hard-to-find Chinese introduction with no known serious insect pests or diseases. Destined for great popularity. From 2 gallon pots.
