Chimonanthus (Wintersweet) - praecox Luteus

Chimonanthus (Wintersweet) - praecox Luteus

Common Name: Wintersweet
Hardiness Zones: 6 7 8 9

Description: Profusion of nodding, 1" translucent yellow blooms cover the bare branches and keep opening from December 'til March in the South. (February 'til April farther north.) They emit a distinctive fragrance, pervasive but not overbearing--slightly sweet and richly scented of lemon and spice. The blossoms look especially attractive when cut. One or two branches will perfume the entire house; one plant the entire garden. Glossy emerald green foliage, yellow-hued in autumn, clothes a 120" tall shrub that grows almost as wide. C. p. Luteus is a selected form with the same delicious fragrance, but with larger blooms of a uniform, more conspicuous sulphur yellow. Blooms somewhat later, more upright in growth habit and a full zone hardier than the common sort. Best in full sun or very light shade in well-drained, good garden soil. Site in protected area, away from winter winds. Prune after flowering to maintain the vigorous growth which flowers best the following winter. From 3 gallon pots.
