Schizophragma (Japanese Hydrangea Vine) - hydrageoides

Schizophragma (Japanese Hydrangea Vine) - hydrageoides

Common Name: Japanese Hydrangea Vine
Hardiness Zones: 4 5 6 7 8

Description: Woody self-clinging vine similar to, but more refined than, Hydrangea a. petiolaris. Unlike the climbing hydrangea, which has arching stems that reach out three feet from the surface , schizophragma develops an intricate tracery of reddish brown stems that lay flat against the surface. They are particularly handsome in winter. Giant 8-10" lace-cap blooms of pure white cascade for about four to six weeks in midsummer. Toothed, heart-shaped, dark green leaves turn golden amber in fall. Ideal climbing a tree or masonry wall where it will firmly self-support with adhesive rootlets. Grows best in full to part shade in rich, moist soil. Ht. 30'.
