Christmas Rose

Through the years a variety of plants over time have come to be called "Christmas Rose"; they all are steeped in a legend that dates back centuries. Most frequently, the plant Americans associate with the Christmas Rose legend is the Hellebore. Just as in the legend, our Hellebore blooms pastel pink.

This is a true perennial, returning year after year for enjoyment. Easy to grow, it matures into a mound of evergreen leaves almost 3 feet wide and 18-24 inches high. In most North American climates, where the soil freezes, a late winter thaw will bring a much appreciated floral display. The 2 inch flowers tend toward pastel pink and last for 2-3 months.

Lovely under deciduous trees, in shady patios or courtyard gardens. It provides a pleasant textural diversion in a bed of hostas, or in a mixed border. And, deer do not eat Hellebores! It prefers some shade and a moist, but well-drained woodsy soil. Zones 4-9.
