Rudbeckia Fulgida Goldsturm
PPA's 1999 Perennial Plant of the Year
Rudbeckia Fulgida Goldsturm (Sullivantii) is often referred to as
the Perennial Black-Eyed Susan or Yellow Coneflower. It produces its
easily spotted, long-lasting terminal heads of rayed, yellow flowers
July through September in most areas. 'Goldsturm' works
exceptionally well in both residential and commercial landscapes
because of its durability and dramatic visual impact. Rudbeckia
Fulgida Goldsturm is also attractive to butterflies and is
well-suited for cut flower arrangements.
Rudbeckia Fulgida Goldsturm (Sullivantii) was selected by the
Perennial Plant Association as the 1999 Perennial Plant of the Year.
Acclaimed as one of the most popular perennials for the past fifty
years, its bright golden-yellow flowers shine in gardens worldwide.
The Rudbeckia Fulgida Goldsturm (Sullivantii) shorter than many
similar varieties with heights to about 32 inches. It is a
long-lived, low maintenance, and thrives in full sun to partial
shade. It tolerates clay soils and mild droughts, but grows best in
well-drained, consistently moist soil. 'Goldsturm' coneflower
performs as well in the high heat and humidity of the South as it
does in North with frigid winter temperatures. Plant bare-root or
container-grown plants anytime during the growing season, 18 inches
apart. When establishing a new planting, mulch to retain moisture. 'Goldsturm'
has few pest or disease problems.
